The COUNTIF function requires two criterion. First we tell the function what range to look in, then we tell the function what we’re looking for in that range. Every cell that contains the data we’re looking for is then counted.
Here is an example of people and what phone models they have:
Now let’s say we want to count how many people have Samsung models.
It’s easy to see the two criterion provided.
B1:B10 is our range. “Samsung” is the string we’re looking for. The function looks in the range and counts how many times the string “Samsung” appears in that range.
