As a Computer Applications Technology teacher, I am always surprised that so many of my students get the concepts of “web browser” and “search engine” mixed up. It really is frustrating when I mark a paper and I see the student has not understood the difference between the two.
I think it has something to do with the fact that we use the term ‘browser’ and that is an active function much like the word ‘search’. Students ignore the word ‘engine’ and then that’s when the confusion kicks in! Perhaps because they’re browsing when they are searching and searching when they are browsing. You see the confusion?
Here is a great video showing a little bit about how Google works when you type in a search query. There are others which I will post when I find time. I hope this helps students understand the concept of searching and what Google does.
Tech-Time is a category on the Tech Teachers web site that consists of short videos of interest that a teacher can use to show to his/her class at the end of the day/cycle/lesson to generate discussion, inspire, create interest, inform or perhaps even help solidify some of the concepts being taught in CAT "theory".
I try find videos that I can use in my class and share them here on the web site in the category called Tech-Time. I hope you can use these videos too for your classes.
A folder with ALL featured Tech-Time videos in MP4 format is available in the Resources section
