A trojan horse is a program that appears useful but is, in fact, malicious that tricks a user to install it. Unexpected changes to computer settings and unusual activity, even when the computer should be idle, are strong indications that a Trojan is residing on a computer. A Trojan cannot replicate itself.
The term is derived from the Ancient Greek story of the deceptive Trojan Horse that led to the fall of the city of Troy.
